Hakeem Jeffries Blasts Karoline Leavitt’s Call for Civility: ‘Mind Your Own Business’

Apr 29 2026

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) unleashed a scathing critique of White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt and the Trump administration after Leavitt urged a reduction in political rhetoric against President Donald Trump and his supporters, following a violent incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

“Mind your own business,” Jeffries declared. “Clean up your own house before you lecture us on our language.”

This exchange unfolded during a press briefing on Monday, where a reporter referenced the charged language surrounding the WHCD shooting, particularly Leavitt’s comments and Jeffries’ own phrase “maximum warfare” regarding redistricting discussions prior to the event.

“You’ve faced threats yourself, so why not consider toning down your language, even if it pertains to redistricting?” the reporter inquired.

“What’s fascinating is that the so-called White House press secretary, who is utterly disgraceful—a blatant liar—had the audacity to criticize Democrats for statements taken out of context while ignoring the violent rhetoric from MAGA extremists,” Jeffries responded. He condemned the president for pardoning “violent rioters,” emphasizing that many have returned to their communities to commit further offenses.

“One of those individuals threatened my life,” he recounted. “[The rioter] said, ‘Kill the terrorists.’ Where does that language originate? Which Republicans use such terms? Why did this pardoned MAGA extremist choose to direct terrorist language at me when he threatened my life?”

Jeffries dismissed Leavitt’s attempts to lecture the nation on civility.

Earlier, he reaffirmed his stance on “maximum warfare.”

“Regarding my comment about ‘maximum warfare, everywhere, all the time,’ in relation to the redistricting battle initiated by Republicans, I stand firm,” Jeffries stated on Monday.

“Feel free to continue criticizing me,” he added, addressing Republicans directly. “I couldn’t care less about your criticism.”
