Hawaii Doctor's Wife Testifies One Year After Alleged Cliff Attack

Mar 25 2026

Arielle Konig took the witness stand on Tuesday, marking one year since her husband, anesthesiologist Gerhardt Konig, allegedly attempted to end her life by pushing her off a cliff during a hike in Hawaii.

"I walked up to him, he grabbed me really forcibly by my upper arms and he said, 'I'm so f****** sick of this s***. Get back over there.' And he starts pushing me back towards the cliff," she recounted, her voice steady yet filled with emotion.

In her testimony, Arielle detailed a terrifying encounter where Gerhardt allegedly tried to stab her with a syringe. When that failed, she claimed he resorted to bashing her head with a rock.

"He's saying, like, 'You're done. We're done with you. We don't need you anymore. You're done. You're done,'" she recalled, painting a chilling picture of the confrontation.

Gerhardt Konig, previously affiliated with the Anesthesia Medical Group in Hawaii and an anesthesiologist at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, faces charges of second-degree attempted murder.

Prosecutors allege that the attack stemmed from a dispute over a selfie near the edge of a cliff along the Pali Puka trail on Oahu, where the couple was celebrating Arielle's birthday. This incident led Arielle to file for a temporary restraining order last year.

In May 2025, Arielle initiated divorce proceedings, as reported.

Nurse Sarah Bucksbom, who witnessed the alleged assault, called 911 after seeing Arielle's injuries.

"Her face was covered in blood. Her head was covered in — she was just fully covered in blood," Bucksbom testified, emphasizing the severity of Arielle's condition.

During opening statements, Gerhardt's attorney claimed that Arielle, a nuclear engineer, was the aggressor in the situation. "She picks up a rock and hits him in the face with it, and he quickly reacts, human reaction, grabs the rock, hits her twice, and stops," Thomas Otake argued.

Otake also referenced a call Gerhardt made to his 19-year-old son after the incident, suggesting it was a farewell. "He was calling him to say goodbye. He was calling him to tell him he was sorry. He was calling him to tell him he wished he was a better man," he stated.

Conversely, the prosecution interpreted this call as a confession. "He says, 'I am not going to make it back. I tried to kill Arielle, but she got away,'" deputy prosecuting attorney Joel Garner contended.

The trial continues with uncertainty surrounding whether Gerhardt or his son will take the stand. If convicted, he faces a potential life sentence.
