Hegseth's Call for 'Patriotic Press' Coincides with Fox News Headline

Mar 17 2026

In a striking coincidence, Fox News aired a headline that mirrored the very sentiments expressed by former host Pete Hegseth, who recently criticized the media for its portrayal of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Just days after Hegseth's impassioned plea for a more patriotic press, the network displayed a banner reading “Mideast War Intensifies,” which he had condemned during a briefing.

During a press conference on Friday, Hegseth expressed his frustration over how the media covered U.S. and Israeli military actions against Iran, which have escalated since February 28. He lamented that a typical news banner might depict the situation with visuals of civilian casualties or energy targets hit by Iranian forces, stating, “That’s what they do.”

Instead, he proposed an alternative headline: “Iran Increasingly Desperate,” criticizing the media for failing to align its coverage with the narrative preferred by the Trump administration. “They know it and so do you, if it can be admitted,” he remarked, underscoring his belief that the press was not adequately supporting the White House's perspective.

On Sunday, Fox News featured an interview with Chief Foreign Correspondent Trey Yingst, which included the contentious chyron “Mideast War Intensifies.” This alignment with Hegseth’s earlier comments did not go unnoticed; it was highlighted by social media users and later discussed in CNN’s Reliable Sources newsletter.

The ongoing conflict has intensified criticisms from Trump and his administration towards the media, accusing them of disseminating misinformation to manipulate public perception regarding the war. In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed that Iran was collaborating with “Fake News Media” to circulate AI-generated videos portraying Iranian military successes.

“You can say that those Media Outlets that generated it should be brought up on Charges for TREASON for the dissemination of false information!” Trump asserted, despite credible news organizations refraining from sharing such misleading content.

Furthering his attack, Trump labeled “the Radical Leftwing Press” as intentionally spreading falsehoods while boasting about U.S. military successes against Iran—claims frequently echoed by his administration. During a press briefing aboard Air Force One, he also criticized ABC News as “maybe the most corrupt news organization on the planet” when questioned about the conflict.

Since Trump authorized military strikes against Iran last month, resulting in significant casualties on both sides, White House officials have been vocal about their dissatisfaction with media coverage. They allege that certain outlets are misrepresenting facts to sway public opinion against the administration.

In response to these concerns, Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr suggested that broadcasters could face license revocation for coverage deemed unfair by the White House. Trump expressed his approval of Carr’s stance, stating he was “thrilled” to see scrutiny directed at “Corrupt and Highly Unpatriotic ‘News’ Organizations.”
