Iran Slams Markwayne Mullin for Celebrating World Cup Exit Amidst Political Tensions

Markwayne Mullin's gleeful celebration over Iran's World Cup exit has sparked a furious backlash from Iranian officials, who are no strangers to the U.S.'s hostile rhetoric. Mullin, the Secretary of Homeland Security, openly stated he "danced a happy dance" upon hearing the news of Iran's elimination.

Iran's national team faced a barrage of challenges leading up to and during the World Cup. They were forced to relocate their training base from Tucson, Arizona, to Tijuana, Mexico. The squad was only allowed entry into the U.S. just one day before their first two matches in Los Angeles and two days before their final game in Seattle.

After each match, the team had to return to Mexico immediately. Staff members were denied visas to enter the United States, further complicating their participation. On the field, Iran narrowly missed advancing to the knockout stages, falling short on goal difference after a late winner against Egypt was overturned by VAR due to a marginal offside call against Shoja Khalilzadeh.

Iran's World Cup campaign ended heartbreakingly after two draws with New Zealand and Belgium. Mullin's comments came after this painful exit, prompting a spokesperson for Iran to lash out at his character, especially given the backdrop of U.S. military actions against the country.

"Iranians are used to the mistreatment and lies of U.S. officials, so no one in Iran is surprised by these hostile remarks," the spokesperson stated. They accused U.S. officials of lacking commitment to international law and the principles expected from a host nation capable of organizing a global sporting event.

The spokesperson emphasized that Mullin's celebration reflects a level of pettiness that cannot tolerate a football team competing on the world stage. "The fact that he openly celebrates Iran's elimination says far more about him than it does about our team," they added.

After Iran's match against New Zealand, their head coach expressed that the U.S. did not want Iran to remain in the tournament due to the inhumane treatment experienced by the team. This sentiment was echoed by the spokesperson, who referenced a tragic bombing incident in Minab that resulted in the deaths of 168 children, linking it to U.S. actions and rhetoric.

Mullin had previously told reporters, "I was so happy when we were able to pull their visas and said they could leave the US soil," adding that he might have even sung or danced in celebration.

He claimed that no other team required as much attention as Iran during the tournament and alleged that the Iranian delegation attempted to smuggle an individual connected to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps into the United States. The Iran Football Federation dismissed this accusation as "false, fabricated, and entirely baseless."
