James Carville Declares AOC's Presidential Dreams Dead: ‘She’s Not Gonna Have Any Chance’

Jul 18 2026

James Carville, a veteran political strategist, bluntly states that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has zero chance of clinching the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028.

The 81-year-old strategist argues that Ocasio-Cortez's far-left politics alienate her from the Democratic primary electorate, which historically favors moderate candidates.

“Let me say something very clearly: The Democrats — not even in ’72 — never nominate the most liberal candidate,” Carville asserted during an appearance on the “Greta Wire” podcast. “But that’s the fantasy of the right wing, that the Democrats are going to nominate a socialist, urbanist, whatever.”

Carville, who played a pivotal role in former President Bill Clinton’s successful 1992 campaign, acknowledged Ocasio-Cortez’s political acumen and effectiveness in Congress but expressed skepticism about her presidential ambitions.

“I think AOC is remarkably talented, let me be very clear about that. Her staff work is pristine,” he told host Greta Van Susteren. “But she’s not gonna run for president because she’s not gonna have any chance.”

He emphasized the critical role of black voters in southern states, particularly South Carolina, in shaping the party's nominee due to the Democratic primary calendar. Carville voiced serious doubts about their support for Ocasio-Cortez.

“Remember who decides who the Democratic nominee is, and that is Southern Blacks,” Carville stated. “And I got news for you: They’re not that liberal.”

Ocasio-Cortez, often viewed as a democratic socialist icon, has been speculated to run for either the presidency or Senate in two years.

In a crowded field of potential 2028 Democratic candidates, including former Vice President Kamala Harris, California Governor Gavin Newsom, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Ocasio-Cortez consistently ranks among the top five.

The New York Democrat has yet to dismiss the possibility of a presidential run in 2028.
