Jennifer Grey Claims Mother Chose Death Over Life After Lung Cancer Diagnosis
Jennifer Grey's mother, Jo Wilder, died at age 94, a week after being diagnosed with lung cancer. Grey claims her mother chose to die “by her own choosing.”
On Instagram, the “Dirty Dancing” star described Wilder as “brave” and “deep.” She shared a carousel of throwback photos, stating, “My mother, Jo Wilder, passed away on July 4th — by her own choosing, on her own terms, exactly as she lived.”
Wilder learned of her lung cancer diagnosis just a week before her death. Grey emphasized that her mother opted for grace over fear, believing that leaving this world with dignity is an honor.

Wilder had a promising career as a young actress on the New York stage but ultimately prioritized motherhood over ambition. Grey noted that if Wilder had chosen her career over raising her children, they would not have experienced the same nurturing upbringing.
Grey expressed her love in her tribute: “I love you, Mom. Thank you for showing me how to do it all, even this, with grace.”
Grey's post received an outpouring of condolences from friends in Hollywood. Musician Richard Marx commented on the tribute, expressing admiration for Wilder and sending love to Grey.

Actor Julianne Moore also offered condolences, stating, “So sorry for your loss.”
Wilder was born in Brooklyn and made her Broadway debut in the musical “She Loves Me” in 1963. She appeared on various television series during the late 1950s and early ’60s, including “How to Marry a Millionaire” and “The Detectives.”
In 1958, Wilder married actor Joel Grey. Jennifer Grey recalled that her mother recognized the impracticality of having two actors in the family and believed her husband needed the career more than she did.

In her memoir, “Out of the Corner,” Grey described her mother’s intensity while singing show tunes and opera around the house. She felt that Wilder had been unfairly rejected from her intended trajectory.
Joel Grey achieved significant success in his career, winning an Oscar in 1973 for his role as the Emcee in “Cabaret.” He and Wilder divorced in 1982 but maintained a good relationship post-split.
Jennifer Grey is currently working on a sequel to “Dirty Dancing” and has honored Wilder multiple times over the years. In 2022, she expressed gratitude for still having her mother, calling her an incredible champion.
