In a candid 2023 chat on PBS's Tell Me More, the artist, born Jewel Kilcher, recounted, "I almost died in an emergency room parking lot because they didn't see me because I didn't have insurance." The stark reality of her situation is a chilling reminder of the healthcare crisis.
But fate intervened. "Luckily, a doctor had seen me get turned away and he went out and he knocked on my door and he handed me antibiotics and his card," the now 51-year-old revealed. "And he saved my life; it turned out I had sepsis." Talk about a guardian angel in scrubs!

Reflecting on that dark chapter, she stated, "This was just the most transformative time in my life." Jewel's journey from despair to survival is nothing short of remarkable.
Her past is riddled with pain, including a tumultuous upbringing with her 'abusive' father, Atz, in Homer, Alaska. In a 2020 interview, she shared, "My mom [Lenedra Carroll] left when I was 8 years old, and my dad took over raising me and my brothers at that age." The scars of her father's PTSD from Vietnam were deep, yet largely unrecognized at the time.

At just 15, Jewel fled her family's homestead for independence but quickly found herself homeless. "I ended up homeless because I wouldn't have sex with a boss. I started living in my car because my boss wouldn't give me my paycheck. Then my car got stolen," she recounted, painting a vivid picture of her struggles.
Despite the chaos, Jewel's story doesn't end in tragedy. In adulthood, she and her father managed to mend their fractured relationship after he embarked on his own healing journey in his 60s. A testament to resilience and redemption amidst the storm of life.
