Lawrence O’Donnell Critiques Trump’s Iran War Focus, Highlights Distractions

Apr 24 2026

MS NOW host Lawrence O’Donnell unleashed a scathing critique of President Donald Trump on Wednesday, accusing him of “accomplishing nothing” in what he termed the “non-negotiations” regarding the ongoing conflict with Iran. O’Donnell emphasized that while the war rages on, Trump has diverted his attention to unrelated matters.

With the conflict now exceeding 50 days, O’Donnell pointed out the grim reality of “explosions and death,” yet noted that Trump has provided “nothing” beneficial for Americans or the global community, aside from “higher prices on everything.”

“Instead of devising strategies to assist Americans through what he claims is a temporary spike in gas prices and other costs, Donald Trump spent his day on social media lamenting the United States Supreme Court,” O’Donnell remarked.

On his Truth Social platform, Trump criticized the Supreme Court for ruling against many of his “emergency” tariffs, a power that O’Donnell reminded viewers is constitutionally reserved for Congress. He also highlighted that the ruling allows American businesses to seek refunds for these tariffs.

“Donald Trump has implicitly threatened businesses that apply for those refunds,” O’Donnell stated, elaborating that major refunds amounting to billions are owed to corporations like Walmart, Apple, and Amazon. “Yesterday, Donald Trump expressed he would be quite pleased if they chose not to pursue those refunds,” he added.

During an appearance on “The Squawk Box,” Trump made comments that raised eyebrows. “His words were that he would ‘remember,’” O’Donnell explained. “He’d ‘remember’ if those large companies do not request their refunds. This can be interpreted by executives as a presidential threat that Donald Trump may retaliate against them.”

O’Donnell pointed out that this is not the only distraction for Trump amid the Iran conflict, which has already claimed the lives of at least 13 U.S. service members and over 3,000 Iranians. He also noted Trump’s efforts to cast doubt on the integrity of American elections.

“At 1:34 p.m. today, while achieving nothing in the non-negotiations with Iran, Donald Trump announced findings from his investigation into last night’s election in Virginia, revealing to both the world and Iranian leaders what’s truly occupying his thoughts,” O’Donnell said.

He quoted Trump’s unfounded claim on social media that “A RIGGED ELECTION TOOK PLACE” following Virginians' decision to redraw congressional lines, a move that could potentially grant Democrats up to 10 new seats in the upcoming midterms.

“Who needs an investigation when Detective Trump is on the case?” O’Donnell quipped. “He just needs to know who won the election — then he knows if it was rigged.”

O’Donnell asserted that Trump initiated this redistricting conflict last year by urging Texas Republicans to alter their congressional lines, which ultimately led to successful efforts by Democrats in California and Virginia, potentially jeopardizing Trump’s political future.

“This redistricting could very likely result in a Democratic majority in the House, granting them full authority to investigate the corruption linked to Trump-world that was highlighted in a Senate hearing today,” he remarked regarding ongoing probes into Trump’s lucrative foreign dealings.
