White House Under Fire for Photo Featuring Women's Tennis Champions with Trump and Male Figures Dominating

Apr 23 2026

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump hosted the University of Georgia women’s tennis team at the White House, but a photo from the event has ignited controversy. In the image, Trump and several male figures, including university representatives and coaching staff, take center stage, overshadowing the NCAA title-winning athletes.

Shared by White House aide Margo Martin, the photo features Trump smiling and giving a thumbs-up while flanked by two of the winning players on an elevated platform. However, most of the athletes are relegated to the back two rows, raising eyebrows among viewers.

The backlash was immediate on social media, with critics pointing out that men were prominently featured in the foreground. One user remarked that the image exemplifies how Trump acknowledges women, while another described it as “so egregiously bad that it’s an assault on good sensibility.”

While it is customary for presidents to be at the forefront during celebrations of champion athletes, typically both the commander-in-chief and key athletes share the spotlight. This particular arrangement has drawn ire, as many felt it diminished the accomplishments of the women’s team.

Comments on the team’s Instagram post reflected disappointment, with some calling for a “redo” of the photo. A White House spokesperson responded to the criticism by accusing “failing reporters suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome” of fabricating a narrative aimed at creating division during a time meant for celebration.

“It’s pretty clear to anyone with an ounce of commonsense that the women’s team is accompanied by their fantastic coaches,” the spokesperson stated in an email.

Other images from the event shared by Martin show Trump again positioned centrally, though in those instances, women are more prominently featured alongside him compared to this particular photo.

The UGA Athletic Association expressed its honor at being recognized by the White House, emphasizing pride in the team’s achievements. Coach Drake Bernstein, positioned to Trump’s right in the controversial photo, conveyed to a local news outlet that the team was “thrilled” to represent their university and state at such a prestigious venue.

“This is a terrific experience and memory for these young ladies to be able to share for the rest of their lives,” he added, highlighting the significance of the occasion despite the surrounding controversy.
