Melania Trump’s marriage is under the microscope as she vanishes from public life, with a PR expert claiming it’s a calculated move.
The First Lady has made only 14 to 16 public appearances this year, according to journalist Joanna Coles, who labeled her absence a “vanishing act.” While she attended the 2026 World Cup final and Fourth of July celebrations, she skipped significant events like Donald Trump's trip to China and Donald Trump Jr.'s wedding.
Coles expressed her bewilderment at Melania's lack of presence, while publicist Dylan Thomas Cotter suggested she might be trying to “distance herself” from her husband.

This speculation follows an awkward moment where Trump’s assistant was caught on camera being told to “change his diaper.”
Cotter stated, “The public is witnessing a First Lady who is strategically positioning and publicizing herself while also distancing herself from the very man tasked with governing this country.”
He noted this marks a departure from the traditional “stand by your man” narrative historically followed by First Ladies.
Cotter continued, “There’s quite a bit of power at play within any political administration. The focus appears to be more on personal PR and business ventures than on providing consistent high-level public service.”

He concluded that if Melania is indeed stepping back, it could reinforce perceptions that her powerful partner feels overshadowed by women in the media who challenge him.
Coles and author Michael Wolff discussed Melania's marriage on a podcast, highlighting her near invisibility this year. Coles remarked, “We really have seen almost nothing of the first lady this year, which is why it was a surprise to see her.”
She noted Melania’s limited appearances, stating, “We’ve seen her three times this month at UFC at the fireworks. She was there with Barron at the World Cup final on Sunday.”

In stark contrast, Coles pointed out that Michelle Obama made between 100 to 150 public appearances annually, Laura Bush around 120, and Jill Biden over 100 alongside Joe Biden.
Wolff also highlighted Melania's minimal presence on the 2024 presidential campaign trail. Coles questioned, “What is she doing the rest of the time? It’s very odd that she’s missing, and she is particularly elegant.”
She added, “I always like to know what she’s wearing when she shows up. What is she doing? What does she do with all her time?” Wolff described the Trump marriage as “the strangest marriage in the history of all presidential marriages.”
Details about Melania and Donald's unusual sleeping arrangements have also surfaced.
