Michael Jordan Slams Social Media's Grip on Sports Betting

Oct 25 2026

Michael Jordan, a titan of basketball and global icon, is acutely aware of the seismic shifts in the NBA and sports betting since his era.

At the SBC Summit in Lisbon, he dissected the current state of professional basketball and its intertwining with gambling.

“If I were to play today, what would the game be?” Jordan mused. “It’s a totally different game. But I think ultimately, the conclusion that I come to is that I just play the game. I can’t worry about what people are betting on. I can’t worry about what the stats are. I never worry about the stats. All I care about is the end of the game.”

Social media has obliterated the veil between players and fans, granting unprecedented access to athletes' lives on and off the court. Jordan recognizes that his own life would have been under constant scrutiny, driven by fervent fan engagement.

“I remember, actually you wouldn’t know what I did before the game,” he reflected. “You wouldn’t know what I did after the game. Today, you know all those things. And I think that’s because the fans want to be connected with the athlete even greater.”

This relentless exposure gives bettors a sharper insight into potential outcomes on the court.

“On top of that, these guys are looking at that to understand what the betting scenario is, or how they’re going to set their odds.”
