Republican Lawmaker Rips Into Trump’s ‘Grifters’ as U.S. Mint Unveils $1 Trump Coins
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) unleashed a brutal critique of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s announcement that the U.S. Mint is producing a “new $1 gold coin” featuring President Donald Trump.
“Congratulations, we’ve entered the end stages,” Massie blasted on X. “Eliminate the penny, plug the nickel, and make some commemorative gold coins nobody can afford.”
He expressed disdain for those who will be duped into buying “worthless knockoffs” from the usual grifters.
Bessent shared an image of the coin, but the term “gold” is misleading; the Trump coin will not contain any actual gold. Reports indicate that these coins will be made from non-precious metals.
Bessent announced earlier this week that these coins will hit the market in the fall.
The production of this coin comes on the heels of Trump’s directive to halt penny production, which costs four cents to manufacture.
Massie’s reference to the nickel likely ties back to Bessent’s comments last year about exploring cheaper materials for nickels.
Beyond this new $1 coin, Trump and his associates have profited significantly from other coins, including “commemorative” coins sold at exorbitant prices with no actual cash value.
Last month, the Trump Organization partnered with UFC to sell gold commemorative coins priced as high as $12,000.

The Trumps have raked in even more from crypto coins, with Trump himself pocketing hundreds of millions from a meme coin and a staggering $1.2 billion from crypto and related ventures overall.
However, not everyone has fared well; nearly 1 million individuals who purchased the Trump meme coin collectively lost $3.8 billion, according to reports.
Massie, a consistent critic of Trump, faced backlash for supporting legislation aimed at releasing files related to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. He is set to exit Congress at the end of this term after losing his primary to a challenger backed by Trump.
