Jack White declares that the American flag belongs to everyone, not just the MAGA crowd, in a fiery response to the current political climate under a “tyrant.”
On July Fourth, the frontman of The White Stripes took to Instagram, delivering a powerful message to disillusioned Americans feeling the weight of the nation’s struggles.
“I leave you with a reminder: MAGA doesn’t own our flag and never will,” White asserted. He emphasized the significance of this day, stating, “on this anniversary of a nation currently in peril that was founded on the indelible human right, duty, and endeavor to fight against tyranny and the current tyrant we suffer under today.”
While he targeted Trump directly, White also celebrated the elements of American life that inspire pride. “Happy 250th to America! And even more importantly the concept that America is a possibility, a promise of an attainable ideal, all things achievable in the pursuit of happiness and true freedom,” he proclaimed.
He expressed his belief in grassroots movements, saying, “I believe in the rock and roll band in the garage, the protest in town square, the drive-in theater, the workers on the way to the car plant, the melting pot and the integration of faiths, Woody Guthrie and Lead Belly.”
White continued to highlight cherished aspects of American culture. “Thanksgiving dinner, the soup kitchen feeding the homeless, the sunrise in the Grand Canyon and the building and climbing of the tallest skyscrapers.”
His stance on the flag resonates with many who feel it has been appropriated by conservative factions during Trump’s presidency. An anonymous Democrat from Ohio shared sentiments about this shift, stating, “I do a side-eye every time I see something that is overly flagged up, like people with a big flag on their shirt, because I feel like it has been co-opted into a conservative thing.”
Trump’s own actions haven’t helped; he has been seen embracing the flag and often blurs the lines between patriotism and partisanship.
