Trump Orders DHS to Compensate TSA Amid Government Stalemate

President Trump has instructed the Department of Homeland Security to ensure TSA employees receive their paychecks, even as the government remains in a state of shutdown. This directive comes after TSA agents faced another missed payday.

In a memorandum issued on Friday, Trump mandated Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin and Russell Vought, director of the White House’s Office of Management and Budget, to allocate unspecified funds to compensate TSA personnel, which includes approximately 50,000 airport security officers.

The partial government shutdown has persisted for about six weeks, leading to significant delays at airports due to long security lines. Democrats have withheld funding for DHS, which encompasses TSA, until reforms are made to Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection.

While some TSA agents have resigned or called in sick due to unpaid wages, immigration agents continue to receive their salaries thanks to funding from a major bill signed by Trump last summer. Although immigration agents have been deployed to assist at airports, their presence has not significantly alleviated wait times.

The source of the funds for TSA payments remains uncertain. Trump’s memorandum indicated that Mullin and Vought should utilize “funds that have a reasonable and logical nexus to TSA operations.”

The White House’s Office of Management and Budget has been contacted for further clarification on this matter.

In his memorandum, Trump criticized what he termed the “Democrat-caused shutdown,” emphasizing the urgency of the situation. “If Democrats in Congress will not act to honor the service of our TSA officers, who are now performing their critical public safety responsibilities without knowing whether they will be able to buy food for their families or pay their rent, then my Administration will take action,” he stated, labeling the current circumstances as an “emergency situation compromising the Nation’s security.”

According to Trump, nearly 500 TSA agents have resigned, with thousands more calling in sick at unprecedented rates due to the lack of pay. Friday marked yet another missed payday during the ongoing shutdown.

“Security wait times at some airports have reached untenable lengths of three or more hours,” the memorandum noted. “These increased wait times, combined with declining morale among TSA staff, unacceptably heighten the risk of security vulnerabilities within our domestic travel system and have negatively impacted countless Americans.”

The Department of Homeland Security announced on social media that TSA employees could expect to receive their pay as early as Monday. “TSA is grateful to the President and Secretary for their leadership to put money back into the pockets of TSA employees who worked without pay during the ongoing Democrat DHS shutdown,” the agency stated.

Earlier on Friday, the Senate passed a bill aimed at funding most of DHS, including TSA; however, Trump expressed disapproval during an interview with Fox News, stating it “wasn’t appropriate” as it did not include funding for ICE and CBP.

House Speaker Mike Johnson criticized the Senate bill and announced plans to propose a different bill that would fully fund DHS for 60 days “as soon as possible.”

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer dismissed the 60-day continuing resolution as “dead on arrival in the Senate.” He reiterated that Democrats are willing to fund essential Homeland Security functions but will not provide unchecked funding for what he described as Trump’s “lawless and deadly immigration militia” without necessary reforms.

The Trump administration has faced significant criticism for its stringent immigration policies, which opponents argue employ aggressive tactics. The fatal shootings of U.S. citizens Renee Good and Alex Pretti by immigration agents in Minneapolis earlier this year sparked public outrage, with the administration defending these actions as self-defense.

Before departing for Miami on Friday, Trump addressed reporters at Joint Base Andrews, stating, “The Democrats want to let illegals come into the country, criminals, murderers, every kind of criminal you can imagine, and the Republicans just don’t want to have it happen.”
