Trump's Slurred Speech Sparks Health Fears at White House Correspondents' Dinner

Jul 25 2026

President Donald Trump, 80, delivered a speech at the rescheduled White House Correspondents' Dinner, but his performance raised eyebrows as he slurred his words and appeared disoriented.

The event took place at the Waldorf Astoria in Washington, D.C., after a previous attempt was thwarted by a security threat. On April 25, a gunman charged past a security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton, forcing the Secret Service to evacuate Trump and other attendees.

During his two-hour speech, Trump was accused of rambling incoherently and slurring his words. Observers noted that he seemed to doze off at one point, further fueling concerns about his health.

Trump emphasized s-sounds and mumbled phrases like, "Exactly twenty. It's like 21 pounds. Not good." He awkwardly thanked the outgoing president of the White House Correspondents' Dinner Association, stating, "She should not admit it," before concluding with, "We sort of became friendly," while flashing a grin.

Viewers took to social media to express their worries. One user remarked, "Trump is slurring heavily. It’s either that they have the dosage wrong or the dementia is getting worse!"

Another added, "What is happening? What in the hell is he talking about? He’s all over the place." A third commenter quipped, "Donald Trump's speeches come with an unofficial game: 'Was that one word, two words, or a completely new language?' He slurs like autocorrect is happening in real time. He can’t help himself."

Despite the backlash, some supporters defended him, claiming, "Even when he doesn’t care and gives low-level energy, he’s still the best president we’ve ever had."

Trump appeared fatigued throughout the event and was seen nodding off as awards were presented to journalists for their coverage of his administration.

Weijia Jiang, former president of the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA), described the dinner as a “more intimate gathering,” emphasizing its significance in promoting a free press.

Jiang stated, “This dinner will not only be an opportunity to carry out our program. It will be a statement that violence has no place in American life and a free press will not be intimidated into silence.”

Notably absent from the dinner were Vice President JD Vance, who recently welcomed his fourth child with Second Lady Usha Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and First Lady Melania Trump, 56.
