Trump's State Fair a Ghost Town: Rapture or Just Empty Promises?

Jun 29 2026

Social media users are questioning if a "rapture" hit Trump's Great American State Fair, as reports flood in about the dismal turnout at the event.

The Great American State Fair, a 16-day spectacle organized by the Trump administration, kicked off with sparse crowds at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Reports indicate that attendance has been shockingly low since its opening.

Featuring over 150 exhibits from 56 states and territories, a towering 110-foot Ferris wheel, and rodeo events, the fair opened on Thursday. However, the reality on the ground tells a different story.

On Monday, social media lit up with mockery as users pointed out the near-empty fairgrounds. Journalist Aaron Rupar shared a clip from Fox News showing only a handful of attendees wandering around.

“Did the rapture happen overnight? Fox & Friends is broadcasting from a completely empty Trump state fair on the National Mall,” Rupar posted on X, highlighting the stark absence of visitors.

Rupar followed up with another clip showcasing “The President’s Own” U.S. Marine Band Brass Quintet performing, again with no fairgoers in sight.

“There are more Fox & Friends anchors at Trump’s fair than actual fairgoers,” he quipped, underscoring the lack of attendance.

Freedom 250, a public-private partnership established to fund events for America’s 250th birthday, claims the fair is open and free to the public daily starting at 10 a.m. However, reports suggest that crowds have been limited since the event began.

The Washington Post noted that “Opening-day crowds were relatively sparse compared with past National Mall events,” with large areas of manicured lawn untouched between rows of white pavilions. The Associated Press echoed this sentiment, stating that “Crowds came in small numbers early Friday.”

Freedom 250 shared footage on Instagram of the U.S. Navy Band performing on opening day. The video showed attendees sitting on the ground, but it was clear that many areas remained unoccupied.

Comments on social media reflected the reality: “Slow motion images to hide the lack of people,” one user remarked. Another bluntly stated, “Nobody’s there.”

Early Monday morning, Trump took to Truth Social to boast about the fair, claiming, “Do you think people appreciate what a fantastic job we did in building and operating the Great American State Fair at the National Mall, packed with happy people?”

He continued his tirade with, “Ask yourself this simple question, ‘DO YOU THINK THAT OBUMA OR SLEEPY JOE BIDEN COULD HAVE DONE IT?’ THE ANSWER IS NO!”

Despite Trump’s assertions of a packed event, social media users have widely shared videos and images showcasing the vast empty spaces at the fair.

Adding to the chaos, multiple artists have pulled out of their scheduled performances due to concerns over the event's political nature. Rapper Young MC expressed his frustration on social media, stating that “The artists were never told about any political involvement with the event.”

Country singer Martina McBride also announced her withdrawal, claiming she was assured it would be a nonpartisan celebration of all 50 states. “Yesterday things started changing and what we were told is, in fact, not what is happening,” she wrote on X.

Confusion reigns regarding the events for America’s 250th anniversary. America250 is a nonprofit supporting the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission established by Congress in 2016 to plan this milestone. It is important to note that America250 and Freedom 250 are not connected.
