Courtney Clenney's Desperate Maneuver to Rewrite Narrative Before Murder Trial

Jul 19 2026

Courtney Clenney, facing murder charges for the death of her ex-boyfriend, is trying to manipulate the narrative ahead of her trial.

Clenney, an adult model, stands accused in the 2022 killing of Christian Obumseli. She claims she acted "in self-defense and as a battered spouse," according to new defense motions filed in Miami-Dade criminal court.

In a July 1 filing, her legal team urged a judge to block the state from using past violent incidents to paint her as the aggressor. They want to introduce evidence of Obumseli's 2020 arrest warrant if the prosecution characterizes him as peaceful or nonviolent.

The warrant, included in the defense documents, charged Obumseli with cruelty to a nonlivestock animal, a Class A misdemeanor, in Travis County, Texas. The offense date is listed as November 2, 2020, but the resolution of the case remains unclear.

Details from the warrant reveal that staff discovered Obumseli's deceased dog, Halo, trapped in a kennel after a flat had been abandoned. Investigators found food but no water, with feces surrounding the animal.

A veterinary pathologist concluded that dehydration from lack of water was the most likely cause of death. Investigators believed Halo had been dead for five to seven days before being discovered, according to the defense motion.

This dispute over the dog's death feeds into a larger pretrial battle regarding how the jury will view Clenney and Obumseli's tumultuous relationship.

The evidence fight also includes widely publicized elevator footage that prosecutors aim to use to depict Clenney as the instigator of violence.

In a separate filing on June 29, Clenney's legal team contended that prosecutors are presenting a misleading excerpt of the February 2022 elevator video. The state claims it shows Clenney hitting Obumseli and pulling his hair until he escapes.

However, the defense argues that prosecutors start the video too late. They assert that earlier footage shows Clenney entering the elevator partially dressed and barefoot, without shoes, keys, wallet, or phone. By the time she reached the lobby, her foot was bleeding.

The defense claims that Obumseli later entered the elevator, noticed blood on the floor, and wiped it away with his foot.

When Clenney re-entered the elevator, Obumseli followed her. Her lawyers argue that she repeatedly pressed the elevator buttons in an apparent attempt to close the doors before he could get inside.
