Idris Elba Sparks Outrage with Anti-'Woke' Rant on Bond
Idris Elba, the British actor, has stirred controversy by declaring that the iconic character James Bond should not be "woke." This statement comes amid ongoing speculation about his potential casting as the next 007.
Elba has been a popular choice to take over the role from Daniel Craig, yet he has consistently denied any interest in playing Bond. In 2024, he told CBS This Morning that while the idea is a "massive compliment," he would "never" portray the character.
In a recent GQ interview, Elba reiterated that the rumors surrounding his casting were "never legit." He traced the origins of these rumors back to a comment made by Daniel Craig at the Italian premiere of Quantum of Solace, which occurred shortly after Barack Obama's election victory in 2008. Fans mistakenly believed that this political shift signaled a new era for a Bond of color.
Elba expressed skepticism about the feasibility of a Black Bond, stating, "James Bond was written how he was written for a reason." He acknowledged that while he appreciated the compliment, some markets might not accept a Black male in the role. "Bond is big all over the world," he said, emphasizing that audiences in certain cultures may not embrace this change.
In 2023, during an episode of SmartLess, Elba revealed that the racist backlash he faced over the Bond rumors tainted his initial excitement about the possibility. He further clarified to GQ that he doesn't believe Bond needs to be altered for modern sensibilities.
"Bond is so unrealistic, so a hint of reality is good, but let’s not try and make it woke," Elba stated. He insisted that the character should remain true to its roots: "Don’t try and answer the world’s taste. Just be Bond."
Elba's use of "woke" has drawn ire online, with many accusing him of echoing conservative rhetoric. One critic remarked that it seemed as if he didn't want Bond to represent any minority group. Another user expressed disbelief that Elba would use the term while promoting a film perceived as "woke" due to its character representation.

A new James Bond film is in development under Amazon MGM Studio, which gained full creative control of the franchise in February 2025. The search for the next actor to embody Bond is underway, led by casting director Nina Gold, who outlined that the actor must "ooze sex appeal," possess acting skills, and be young enough to commit to multiple films.
