Melania Trump risks severe embarrassment as the deadline for her foster care legislation approaches, with August looming ominously.

The first lady set a self-imposed deadline for her initiative, demanding that the bill reach her husband’s desk before Congress begins its August recess. This deadline is now less than a month away.

During a bipartisan roundtable in April, Melania Trump expressed her desire for the legislation to be finalized by the August recess, as stated by Missouri Rep. Jason Smith. The Senate must act swiftly, as Congress is set to begin its annual break on August 10, leaving only a narrow window for legislative action before lawmakers return on September 8.

This legislation is part of her Fostering the Future initiative, which aims to enhance access to housing, education, and workforce training for individuals in the foster care system.

Initially, Rep. Smith hesitated to invite Melania to the meeting, citing concerns over her husband’s unpopularity among Democrats. Nevertheless, he proceeded with the roundtable discussion, which had been in the works since President Trump signed an executive order related to the initiative in November.

During the meeting, Melania highlighted a staggering statistic: only 3% of children in foster care achieve a college degree. She framed her legislation as a “moral imperative.”

Smith confirmed that Melania was clear about her expectations. “I want this on Donald’s desk by the August recess,” she told lawmakers. The House passed the bill unanimously, and at a White House congressional picnic on the day of the vote, the Trumps urged swift action from the Senate.

“Hopefully, it will quickly pass in the Senate,” Melania stated confidently. “I’m sure it will. It’s a great thing.”

Despite her optimism, reports indicate that the legislation has stalled in committee. Furthermore, there has been no public pressure from the president on the Senate regarding this measure since the picnic. Current federal data reveals that over 400,000 children are in foster care across the United States.
