Katie Miller's Mental Health Attack on Democrats Crumbles Under Scrutiny

May 30 2026

Katie Miller's reckless jab at the Democratic Party crumbled when she invoked a mental health statistic that experts say doesn't back her claims. The conservative podcast host and former Trump administrator made a bold statement on Fox News, but the data doesn't support her narrative.

She accused the Democratic Party of engaging in “violent political rhetoric,” linking it to real-world violence, including incidents at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner and a rally for President Trump. This incendiary claim came after her husband, White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, misidentified a candidate in a DNC tweet.

Miller's attack targeted Paulina Mangubat, a senior content creator at the Democratic National Committee, labeling her as a “sad liberal woman.” She cited a Pew statistic claiming that 50% of liberal women have identified as having a mental health disorder, using it to paint the Democratic Party as pathetic.

The feud ignited when Stephen Miller commented on a DNC tweet supporting Texas state Rep. James Talarico, incorrectly identifying him. The DNC retaliated with a harsh response, calling him an “ugly fuck.” The DNC has multiple social media managers, making Miller's focus on Mangubat puzzling. Mangubat later admitted to posting the message and stood by it.

Experts weighed in, noting that the DNC's post was more snark than violence. Jonathan Alpert, a psychotherapist, pointed out that political language has become emotionally charged, but equating rude commentary with incitement is misleading. He emphasized the need to avoid dehumanizing political opponents.

Miller's statistic from Pew Research Center specifically pertains to white liberal women aged 18 to 29, not liberal women as a whole. The survey found that 56.3% of this demographic reported being diagnosed with a mental health condition. However, this data was buried in a COVID-19 focused survey and never analyzed in detail.

Zach Goldberg, a research faculty member at Florida State University, clarified that diagnosis rates do not equate to poorer mental health. Factors like help-seeking behavior and access to care can skew these numbers. He noted that he did not intend to mock white liberals but believed the topic warranted further study.

Surveys show conservatives report higher happiness levels than liberals, with young conservative women three times more likely to express satisfaction with their lives compared to their liberal counterparts. However, these surveys do not delve into psychological characteristics or lifestyles that could influence responses.

A study from Tufts University revealed that when conservatives rated their “mood” instead of “mental health,” the happiness gap between liberals and conservatives vanished. This suggests stigma around mental health terms may inflate conservative self-ratings.

Experts stress that mental illness should not be conflated with violence—a distinction Miller failed to make during her Fox News appearance. A 2016 study indicated conservatives often harbor negative attitudes toward those with mental illness.

The data Miller referenced does not substantiate her claims. It primarily reflects disparities in healthcare evaluations rather than serving as evidence for political violence or threats.
