Manny Rutinel Crushes Shannon Bird in Colorado Democratic Primary Showdown
Manny Rutinel has emerged victorious in the Democratic primary for Colorado’s 8th District, positioning himself for a critical November clash against Rep. Gabe Evans (R-Colo.) in a district that could sway the balance of power.
Rutinel, currently a state representative, triumphed over Shannon Bird, a former member of the state General Assembly, marking another significant win for the progressive faction against the Democratic establishment.
Bird campaigned on her legislative effectiveness, but Rutinel hammered her for her 2025 vote against a bill that barred local police from collaborating with federal immigration authorities. “Shannon Bird sold out Latino families,” blared a Rutinel attack ad.
Bird received endorsements from moderate groups linked to the New Democrat Coalition and the Blue Dog Coalition, while Rutinel garnered support from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, leveraging his Latino heritage in a district where 40% of residents identify as Latino.
The artificial intelligence industry faction, advocating for new safety regulations, also threw its weight behind Rutinel.
Despite their differences in endorsements, Rutinel and Bird share common ground. Both have served in the state legislature, have similar backgrounds of being raised by single mothers, and align on most policy issues.
The looming question is whether Rutinel can outmaneuver Evans in November. This race is a toss-up and will play a crucial role in determining if Democrats can reclaim control of the House of Representatives next year.
Evans, an Army veteran with a low profile during his first term in the House, is expected to target Rutinel's past advocacy for animal welfare. The district is home to significant meat and dairy producers, including the headquarters of JBS, a major international meatpacking company.
