Soap Star and Wife Perish in Inferno, Leaving Heartbroken Daughter

Actor Paul Avery and his wife Sheila are dead after a devastating house fire, leaving their daughter in shock.

The couple was found unconscious in their home in Blairstown, New Jersey, as flames consumed the property. Emergency responders arrived early Tuesday morning, but despite attempts at CPR, both succumbed to the smoke and heat.

Paul Avery gained fame for his role as bartender Hughie on the soap opera All My Children, where he worked for 12 years. His career also included appearances in the 1978 Superman film and various television shows like Tales from the Darkside.

The New Jersey State Police are investigating the cause of the fire. The Ridge View Echo, a newspaper founded by Paul, confirmed the tragic news.

The couple's daughter, Kyle Avery, expressed her grief on Facebook, stating: "I’m devastated to share that our parents, Paul and Sheila Garry Avery, passed away early this morning." She emphasized their love for each other and their family.

Paul's career extended beyond acting; he was a journalist who wrote film reviews for the New Jersey Herald and reported for the Gazette in Hackettstown. He later became the founding executive editor of the Ridge View Echo.

Colleagues and friends have shared their sorrow. Joe Phalon from the Ridge View Echo remarked on Paul's remarkable life, calling him "the most interesting man in the world" due to his diverse experiences, including acting and being a Vietnam veteran.

Local resident Kevin Martin recalled Paul’s presence in the community, noting how it will take time to adjust to his absence. He highlighted Paul’s skills as a pilot, mentioning his natural talent in gliding.

Service plans for Paul and Sheila are forthcoming as the community mourns their loss.
