Trump Suggests Joe Kent Moved On Too Quickly After Wife's Death in Erratic Interview
During a Monday interview at Palm Beach International Airport, President Donald Trump made an unusual remark regarding Joe Kent's recent marriage, implying that Kent had remarried too soon after the death of his wife. (Watch the video below.)
The mere mention of this topic was unexpected, but Trump's insinuation that Kent, who stepped down as director of the National Counterterrorism Center last week, breached societal norms surrounding grief added an extra layer of confusion.
When pressed by reporters about whether he believed Kent was leaking information, Trump expressed his disapproval, stating he was “not a fan of the guy.” He noted that Kent had previously supported his military initiatives on social media, despite resigning with the assertion that Iran did not pose an immediate threat.
“He was a man that I met at Dover [Air Force Base]. He came when his wife was killed,” Trump recounted, referring to Kent’s late wife Shannon, a Navy intelligence officer who tragically lost her life in 2019 due to a suicide bombing in Syria.
Then came Trump's pointed critique.
“He remarried fairly quickly,” the president stated, leaving many to wonder about the basis of his judgment.
Kent tied the knot with Heather Kaiser, another Army veteran, in August 2023—approximately four and a half years after Shannon's passing.
It remains unclear what specific customs Trump was alluding to in his comments.
Additionally, Trump highlighted Kent's political struggles, noting that the retired Green Beret had lost two congressional races as a staunch pro-Trump conservative. “They gave him a job and this is what he does to me,” Trump remarked, repeating the sentiment multiple times in quick succession.
At least now, the public has a new source for guidance on mourning and remarriage etiquette.
