Discontent Brews Among Voters as Trump Faces Widespread Criticism

Mar 17 2026

Registered voters are expressing dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump's management of key issues as the midterm election year unfolds. A national poll indicates that a majority of voters disapprove of his handling of immigration, tariffs, inflation, and the ongoing conflict with Iran.

In the race for congressional control, Democrats currently hold a 6-point lead over Republicans, with 50% of voters favoring Democratic leadership compared to 44% for Republicans. This shift in preference reflects a growing sentiment among the electorate.

Jeff Horwitt, a Democratic pollster from Hart Research Associates, noted, "The electoral data points, combined with views on President Trump and significant disapproval regarding his actions on Iran and inflation, reveal an electorate that is increasingly frustrated with those in power and eager for change." This sentiment is echoed by Republican pollster Bill McInturff of Public Opinion Strategies, who collaborated on the survey.

Trump's economic policies received particularly low ratings, with 62% of respondents disapproving of his approach to inflation and the cost of living. Only 36% expressed approval. Nearly half of those surveyed, 48%, believe Trump's policies have negatively impacted the economy, while 35% think they have been beneficial.

Criticism extends to tariffs as well; 55% of voters feel that Trump's tariffs have harmed the economy, while just 33% believe they have helped. The poll also revealed that a majority oppose U.S. military strikes on Iran, reflecting a broader discontent with foreign policy decisions.

On immigration, opinions are mixed. While 54% disapprove of Trump's immigration enforcement strategies, 53% approve of his border security measures. This survey was conducted prior to Trump's dismissal of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who was closely linked to the administration's immigration policies.

Public perception of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is largely negative, with over half of voters expressing unfavorable views towards the agency. Conversely, 38% hold a positive view. Additionally, 43% of voters have negative opinions about sanctuary cities.

Shifts in public attitudes toward voting laws were also noted. A slight majority, 51%, prioritize preventing ineligible voters from casting ballots, while 47% emphasize the importance of ensuring access for all eligible voters.

Despite their lead in congressional preferences, Democrats face their own hurdles. When asked which party would better address voters' primary concerns, Democrats hold a slim advantage at 48% to 45%. This indicates that while they may lead in preference, challenges remain as they approach the midterm elections.
