England Fan Blows Life Savings on Grandad's World Cup Trip, Gets Cash Back in Shocking Twist

An England fan drained £10,000 of his life savings to take his grandad to the World Cup, only to be stunned when a company returned the cash after their heartwarming story went viral.

Jacob Allmendinger sacrificed his house deposit to treat 80-year-old Geoff Golliker to a once-in-a-lifetime trip across the USA and Mexico. The 21-year-old had been attending Hull City games with his grandad since childhood and wanted to repay him.

The duo traveled to New York and Atlanta for matches against Panama and DR Congo, culminating in a historic 3-2 victory at the Azteca Stadium against Mexico.

During their journey, they were frequently recognized on the streets as their story gained traction online. A US-based online crypto casino, Metawin, reached out to Jacob on social media, promising to refund his money if England defeated Panama by more than two goals.

When England only managed a 2-0 win, Metawin took to X, pledging to pay back £10,000 if England triumphed over DR Congo. Jacob was left in disbelief when they honored that promise after England's 2-1 victory.

Jacob, hailing from North Ferriby, East Yorkshire, expressed his amazement at the gesture. "I was shocked. I didn’t quite believe it until I checked my bank account and saw the money there," he said. "I think I’ll save it until I get back home and put it in a savings account for now."

He contemplated future possibilities with the money: "We could go to the European Championships, I could buy a house, anything is possible. It’s just great to have options." Currently still in Mexico, Jacob and Geoff were set to fly to Miami for the quarter-finals.

Reflecting on the Mexico game, Jacob described it as a "once-in-a-generation" experience. He drew parallels between this moment and England's last World Cup victory in 1966, igniting excitement for the remainder of their trip.

Since their story broke, Jacob has received an influx of positive messages from people who resonate with their experience. "I’ve had people reach out who have lost their grandparents and wish they’d done something similar," he noted. "It just makes us cherish this time more."

Geoff added that they were frequently recognized during their travels. "In New York, a guy came up to us and asked if we were the guys traveling around. The Mexican fans were fantastic—very happy and boisterous. The atmosphere is incredible."

Before embarking on this adventure, Jacob had saved for five years with dreams of homeownership. He stated, "I can always make money back; I’m at an age where I can afford to miss out on a house for two or three years. But I won’t ever get to go to the World Cup with my grandad again. We’re more best mates than grandad and grandson."
