JD Vance Bombs with Cringe Joke at Military Speech, Faces Brutal Backlash

Jul 01 2026

JD Vance bombed hard during a speech at Naval Air Station Oceana, where his joke landed with a thud, leaving him humiliated and the audience in silence.

The vice president's visit to the Virginia Beach base aimed to celebrate America’s upcoming 250th anniversary, showcasing “the Trump administration’s efforts to support American warfighters and veterans.”

Vance, reflecting on his time as a U.S. Marine, acknowledged military sacrifices but quickly veered into awkward territory with his humor. He attempted to connect with service members by saying, “There are a lot of reasons why I wanted this job. One of the reasons why I wanted this job is because it’s pretty cool to have the Commandant of the Marine Corps have to salute a member of the E4 mafia. That’s pretty cool. Call it… call it an ego thing, but…” His words trailed off, met with an uncomfortable silence.

The crowd's reaction was deafeningly quiet, and a clip of the moment spread like wildfire on social media, where users unleashed their scorn.

“My god, there’s so much wrong with him it could fill an abnormal psych textbook,” one user remarked.

Another chimed in, “Alright, please make comedy illegal again,” while a third quipped, “Normally, I would say ‘Don’t give up your day job,’ but in JD’s case I’d really like him to give up his day job and try the standup comedy circuit.”

“He’s the only one dumb enough to laugh at his own stupid jokes,” another user added. A fifth comment read, “I’ve seen old mayonnaise with more charisma.”

“Because he has no personality. He’s the kid in school that tried to hang out with everyone but no one liked him,” another user stated. “That room has seen combat, and somehow that was more painful,” one joked.

Despite Vance's cringe-worthy moment, the event featured speakers who honored military service members and their contributions. Rep. Jen Kiggans addressed the crowd before Vance, expressing gratitude to military members and their families.

“I’m here to say thank you to you all, the men and women in uniform and your families,” Kiggans stated. “You are the tip of the spear for us.” She emphasized, “You are what makes our country great. You are what keeps our country free.”

Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins also spoke, highlighting the military’s critical role in the nation’s history as the Fourth of July approaches.

“There would have never been one candle on a cake had it not been for the United States military and those who raised their right hand,” Collins declared. “There wouldn’t be a birthday party without you in uniform.”
