NFL Insider Under Scrutiny as Investigation into Dianna Russini's Conduct Unfolds

Apr 12 2026

Dianna Russini's workplace has confirmed an ongoing investigation regarding her conduct involving NFL head coach Mike Vrabel.

Reports indicate that The Athletic is probing the actions of its senior NFL reporter, following the emergence of photographs depicting her alongside Vrabel, the head coach of the New England Patriots. This information was disclosed by a source familiar with the situation on April 11.

During this investigation, Russini will refrain from reporting duties. The Athletic's editorial standards mandate that journalists must steer clear of any activities that could create a conflict of interest or even the appearance of one, to uphold their credibility.

Since images of Russini and Vrabel surfaced on April 7, both have faced scrutiny. The photos, published by Page Six, show the two—both married—holding hands and embracing.

In response to the controversy, Russini stated, “The photos don’t represent the group of six people who were hanging out during the day. Like most journalists in the NFL, reporters interact with sources away from stadiums and other venues.”

Vrabel echoed her sentiments, asserting, “These photos show a completely innocent interaction and any suggestion otherwise is laughable. This doesn’t deserve any further response.”

Steven Ginsberg, executive editor at The Athletic, previously defended Russini, claiming the photos “lack essential context.” He emphasized that these were public interactions witnessed by many.

Russini joined The Athletic in 2023, with her contract set to expire in August, just ahead of the 2026-2027 NFL season.

Vrabel has been married to Jen since 1999; they met as college sweethearts at Ohio State University and have two sons, Tyler and Carter.

Russini has been married to Kevin Goldschmidt since September 2020. Goldschmidt is a vice president at Shake Shack, and they share two sons, Michael and Joey.

In February 2026, during an appearance on Stugotz and Company radio show, Russini humorously recounted her mother’s comments about her marriage. “I went right back at her,” she said. “I said, ‘Why would you say that to me right now while I’m on a trip? That my husband has a girlfriend?’”

Previously, on a 2021 episode of ESPN’s Get Up, Russini referred to her husband as “someone average,” joking that if she continued discussing him publicly, they might be “divorced by Christmas.” She added, “We’re average together, [and] you know what the worst part is? He sent me a text during that segment—not watching because he actually works for a living—and he said, ‘Good luck today. Be great on Get Up.’ The guy’s got a heart of gold. Here I am on national TV killing him.”
