San Francisco Residents Freak Out Over Fake Homeless Camp

A fake homeless encampment erupted in San Francisco's Financial District, triggering alarm among residents who mistook it for a real crisis. The chaos unfolded when rows of tents appeared along California and Battery streets, leading to a flood of complaints to the city’s 311 line.

This elaborate setup was part of the filming for "2034," a sci-fi mystery directed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, featuring Rachel McAdams and Jeff Daniels. The authenticity of the camp was so convincing that locals were genuinely concerned.

One resident expressed disbelief, stating, “I was walking around, and there’s a million tents everywhere, which seems more than normal for this area.” Another noted, “To the trained eye, somehow they don’t look like regular homeless encampments.”

The incident coincided with Mayor Daniel Lurie’s recent push to attract more film and television productions to San Francisco. He signed legislation aimed at modernizing the city’s film incentive program, which is designed to draw Hollywood back to the area.

A statement from February highlighted the mayor's commitment: “Mayor Daniel Lurie today signed legislation championed by Board of Supervisors President Rafael Mandelman to modernize and strengthen San Francisco’s film incentive program.”

This initiative aligns with a broader strategy across California to revitalize the film industry. Governor Gavin Newsom announced a $750 million film and TV tax credit aimed at boosting local economies and creating jobs in the industry.

“It’s really important for us to have productions here,” stated Manijeh Fata, executive director of Film SF. Despite being set in San Francisco, much of "2034" has been filmed in Serbia and Montenegro. Production is expected to wrap later this month.
