Danny Glover, 79, Confronts Alzheimer’s Diagnosis: “Things Are Going to Be Different”

Danny Glover has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

The actor revealed his health status during a segment with Lester Holt, which aired Wednesday morning.

Glover, known for his role in "Lethal Weapon," stated he received his diagnosis shortly after winning an honorary Oscar in 2022. He expressed, “I could live with it in a sense.”

At 79, he acknowledged the inevitable changes that come with the disease, saying, “I’m sure as it advances, things are going to be different and changing.”

He credited his family for their unwavering support, stating they have “absolutely … got [his] back.”

His daughter, Mandisa, joined the conversation with Holt and emphasized the significance of her father maintaining “control of his own narrative, of his own life story.”

Mandisa stressed the urgency of this moment, saying, “What better time but now for him to speak for himself? It’s important because people ask questions sometimes, and I don’t want to be a dishonest person and say, ‘Oh, yeah, everything is all right. It’s all great.'”

In the interview, Glover reflected on his illustrious career, naming “Places in the Heart” with Sally Fields as his “favorite” project.

He expressed a desire to educate “young people” about their “responsibilities,” asserting that “Justice is our collective responsibility.”

Glover shared insights from his upbringing, noting that he learned from his parents about the potential for personal change. He stated, “They become the architect of their change.”

Previously, Glover has been open about his struggles with epilepsy.

He experienced his first seizure at 15 and managed the condition with medication for two decades.

Over time, he learned to recognize the onset of seizures. He recounted in a blog post that he could alert those around him by saying, “Something is happening to me. Please grab me. Please hold me. I’m about to have a seizure.”

He recalled a moment during a play when he felt an episode approaching and repeatedly told himself backstage, “I will not have this seizure.”
