Doug Burgum's CNN Meltdown: 'North Korea-like Lying' Over Reflecting Pool

Jul 06 2026

U.S. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum's defense of a failed $14 million project to turn the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool “American flag blue” crumbled during a CNN interview, drawing sharp criticism.

In a tense exchange with anchor Dana Bash, Burgum aggressively pushed back against questions about the project, which has been widely scrutinized. Bash opened the discussion by referencing their previous conversation, prompting Burgum to interject, “And we’re still talking about it!”

The focus shifted to a peeling liner in the reflecting pool that allowed algae to thrive, undermining the intended bright blue appearance. Bash pressed Burgum on reports indicating that the damage stemmed from poor execution rather than external factors.

“It peeled off,” Bash stated. “Why did that happen?” Burgum retorted, “It didn’t peel off. There was vandalism. There were box cutters.”

Bash remained skeptical, demanding clarity. “You’re a hundred percent sure that what happened with the liner was vandalism?” she asked. “You can prove it?” After a moment of hesitation, Burgum claimed, “Absolutely, we can,” pointing to photographs he asserted would serve as evidence.

Bash interrupted again, questioning the credibility of his claims. “Photographs of people cutting a three-hundred or three-hundred-fifty-foot gash in the bottom of the reflecting pool?”

Burgum then shifted his focus to attacking the media. “I’m not sure why you and others and the media think you want to question the whole thing,” he said. “It would never just peel off. This is a strong material.”

Clips of this contentious exchange spread rapidly across social media, where viewers expressed disbelief at Burgum’s explanations. One user remarked, “This is North Korea-like straight-faced lying.”

Another commenter added, “Congrats on mastering the art of invisible truth; it’s a talent most of us don’t have.” A third pointed out documented evidence, stating, “Facts are stubborn things … the criminal complaint outlines this behavior: your side just can’t bully the truth anymore.”

“‘It broke apart. We’re disappointed, but we’re fixing it.’ … How hard is that to say?” one user questioned.

Mockery ensued as users ridiculed Burgum’s repeated claims, with one saying, “Like a robot, spewing the words Trump told him to use. Vandalism, box cutter. Vandalism, box cutter, vandalism, box cutter, vandalism, box cutter...”

Another commenter noted, “He keeps forgetting the part where Trump ordered workers to pour peroxide into the water! We got lots of video showing that!”

“The level of stupidity to believe this bulls--t….amazing….” one viewer wrote. Another added, “Because we believe in PROOF. There is none. Therefore, Burgum is lying. Or delusional.”

As the clip continued to circulate, more users chimed in. “Ya know why they continue to question it? Because your story is changing and what you are saying is bullsh— basically,” someone penned. “Everyday MAGA is out there showing us how f—ing stupid they are,” another wrote.

One final comment stated, “This is the kind of man that has the character to say ‘I was only following orders’ when he goes to trial.”
